blueshiftofdeath: phoenix wright tapping his documents of evidence (paper)

Top Secret!, by the creators of Airplane!, is a parody of WWII movies and "Elvis" movies, in which the Elvis-like American protagonist, Nick Rivers, stumbles into being a hero that helps the resistance against East German fascist regime.

(Feel free to go watch Top Secret! and then return to this post.)

One of my and [personal profile] ebaths's favorite scenes in Top Secret! is one in which Nick is captured and tortured by the regime. In the middle of his torture, Nick passes out and has a nightmare that he's "back in (high) school" and missed all of his finals. Then he wakes up to the real life torture, realizes it was a dream, and says, "Thank god!"

This great little sequence clocks in at under a minute in length!

It's funny because of the delivery (I love the out-of-it performance of the dream classmate), the familiarity of the dream (I couldn't find any statistics on how many people have this dream, but it's incredibly common even after graduation, and there are multiple articles on the subject; here's one I found just now), and the absurdity of Nick preferring getting beaten over the mundane and relatively harmless scenario in which he missed his exams.

I think part of the humor also comes from how true it rings. It's absurd that Nick would prefer getting beaten, but in some way also very real. To me the scene, though comedic, is a fantastic illustration of how human experiences are all determined by how we see them. This is often brought up in the context of how we can change our views, and I think less often in the context of how aging changes our world and therefore the way we perceive events-- the latter of which is particularly relevant to Nick Rivers's high school nightmare.

It's easy to forget how little you know as a child; for example, kids often need to have concepts like death explicitly laid out for them since it's not something they'd pick up on their own, whereas as an adult the existence of death (at least in its most abstract form) is second nature. With knowledge so limited, your world is easily defined by the adults around you. They might introduce you to religious concepts or the idea of something like Santa Claus, and though later you may reconsider your beliefs, as a kid typically these concepts are easily absorbed into your idea of reality.

Ideas around school fall into this category. If you're given the sense that you "must" get certain grades, or complete certain milestones (like taking final exams) or else your life is over, then that'll become your reality. Later on, after graduation, you'll likely realize that failing or missing exams don't end your life, even if they cause a lot of stress and extra headaches. In retrospect, the stress of needing to pass your chemistry final may seem almost trivial. Even if the event of "missing your chemistry final" doesn't change, your experience of the event (in terms of your emotions leading up to and following the event) can change if your perception of the world changes.

In the movie, Nick Rivers is a suave, unnaturally "chill" guy, ready to roll with it as he suddenly has to start risking his life. You can imagine that he's seen enough at this point to realize that whatever happens, he can probably make it work, and if not... he's enjoyed his life enough to not freak out too much over the end of it all. But as a teenager, he wouldn't have had acquired this life experience; it seems he was likely relatively sheltered (also funny) and like so many of us, had his brain trapped in the world (perhaps unintentionally) constructed by his parents and teachers-- a world where he had no way of seeing beyond the apparent horizon of doom that was missing his final exams.

So while being imprisoned and physically tortured is definitely worse than missing your final exams, it makes sense for Nick to find torture more tolerable than the dream-- because in the dream, he's not only living out the scenario of missing the exams, he's also re-living the mental state of being in high school. He's been reverted to the him that has no way of knowing that school isn't life or death, and has no sense of how much control he really has over his own life or how many opportunities still lay ahead.

Put another way, the high school nightmare represents not a single situation (such as being in school or missing exams) but a different world (mentally living in a reality in which you have no agency and you perceive that any misstep will be catastrophic). Though the "torture" situation of reality is less desirable than the "missed exam" situation of the nightmare, perception is what defines experience, and Nick naturally welcomes back the world of reality (in which he is an adult that sees near-infinite options for his future) compared to the world of the nightmare (previously described).

The creative prompt for [community profile] sunshine_revival was a recipe but I rarely 'do' recipes and am more of 'let's throw these things together' kinda gal. It works most of the time.

The journaling prompt was favourite summer associated foods, so this is just a ramble of Stuff Kat Likes To Eat When It's Too Hot To Eat

Smoothies: I make a big jug of this, breakfast solved for like three days. I tend to default to 'plain yoghurt, frozen berries, honey, water' mix (I don't like my smoothies very sweet) but recently my peanut butter jar suggested that I could add peanut butter to my smoothies and now I Am Intrigued. It feels extremely indulgent tho. Peanut butter and banana smoothie sounds like a desert! But I want to try.

Berries: I have yet to find a berry I don't like in some form or another. It's one of the main things I miss about Finland; ready access to fresh berries, like blueberries from the forest, or various currants and gooseberries from the garden. My local Tesco tends to have berries on discount often if you hit the store at the right time. I've been known to make a dinner out of that.

Salads: Almost anything goes. My veg box is currently delivering so much green leavy stuff I'm shoving it everywhere. I like to throw in protein (chicken, fish, tofu, hummus) to make a lazy meal out of it. Feta cheese is an indulgence. I also like adding pickled/sour things like pickled cabbage or cucumber, kimchi (should make some again), olives, capers etc. Nom. Fruit if I want to get fancy with it. Seeds definitely.

Hummus: I make this quite often, usually heavily lemon flavoured.

Oven omelette:
Eggs and whatever suitable veg/other things you have (salmon is super nice here). Top with cheese. And add cottage cheese for extra protein and to make it even more filling. Do a whole oven tray (10-12 eggs) and your breakfast/lunch/snack is sorted for several days.

I do also like to barbecue things but can't be bothered to do it just for me. But when [personal profile] dreamersdare and [personal profile] pushkin666 are visiting it is by now a tradition for me to make some salmon bulgogi for the bbq. And I'll probably make some flat breads and tzatziki to, you know, make it fusion cuisine :D

And finally, new potatoes with butter. With some chives. Honestly, so good.

Challenge #3

Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?
Creative prompt: Draw art of or make graphics of summer foods, or post your favorite summer recipes.

I actually talked about my this last time and my love of summer fruits.  I also love corn on the cob when it is it in season.  I made this recipe for corn/chickpea salad the other day, at least I sort of did, I excluded the herbs, olives, and pickled onions, and added some soft cheese cubes.  I also added a tiny bit of maple syrup to the dressing to cut the vinegary/sourness, I saw that on a YouTube shorts vid.  It was very good, and I've been eating it for lunch for the last couple of days.

Since we just passed the halfway point of this year, it's probably a good time to check in on my goal list and see where I'm at.

~Write 90k words - Current word count is sitting at 48,383. So a little over halfway there with six more months to go. I'm feeling optimistic about this one.

~Finish 3 WIPs - None yet, but I've been making progress on several of my WIPs, so hopefully I'll have one ready to post soon(ish).

~Create 100 icons/graphics - Done! My current count is 195 icons and 67 misc graphics, for a grand total of 262.

~Update website every month - Surprisingly, I've been keeping to this one so far. Currently working on updating my B-Western website, but also have some big changes in mind for my main site.

~Move Superman fansite to new host - Not yet.

~Move Librarian fansite to new host - Not yet.

~Finish one of my bingo cards - Making decent progress on my Album Challenge bingo card, so hopefully that one will be done by the end of the year.

~Create two new fanvids - No progress yet.

The Format is reuniting and doing a tiny tour. It's mostly reminding me of how much I loved the Aim and Ignite album by the band fun. which has the same lead singer.

I finished watching The Bear's most recent season and I love those characters but I'm still not especially taken with the writing. Ayo Edebiri is such a talent, though.

Been reading The Ways Things Turn on AO3, which is a Jayne/Simon fic and what a freaking ride. It's very action/adventure but still incredibly romantic and I love it when authors balance those two genres. I haven't read a ton of Firefly fic but a lot of it is from such a different era of fic that there are some conventions that hearken back in an interesting way.Sunshine Revival Challenge #3 )

Just When You Think It Couldn't be More Stupid

Now come six proofs that you can have the IQ of a broken toaster and still make it to Washington D.C.

From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; four U.S. House Representatives from Minnesota, and two from Wisconsin, sent a letter to the Canadian Ambassador to the U.S.

Their subject? The smoke from Canadian wildfires that were coming south and preventing people in their states from enjoying outdoor summer activities.

Seriously.

Since I would not be surprised in the least if you've already started snickering, sure that I'm having you on, here's the story.  It's not behind a paywall, I swear. And it notes with a perfectly straight face, the smoke from U.S. wildfires heading northward. The "Are you actually humans, or malfunctioning Chat GPT programs?" is unspoken.

These six examples of Darwin's Law are either fully aware of the fatuous asininity exhibited in this letter and are doing it to ingratiate themselves with Dear Leader or to their own MAGA constituents ...

... or they're really that stupid.

JFC. Once I would have laughed merrily at this. Today I'm perilously close to weeping.

Reading
  • I've read nothing but fic this week lol Still on Gradence. Currently I'm rereading The Standard Book of Spells by [archiveofourown.org profile] canis_m , which I don't really remember, but I'm enjoying it.
Watching
  • I continued watching movies my roommate wouldn't want to watch. This week was:
    • Bitten. I thought the premise of this movie was interesting, but the soul deep romance fell a bit flat. I also could not figure out who they thought the audience was, with the divorced middle aged man "fucking women amirite" jokes and the twelve year old boy poop jokes.
    • Ghost Shark. Even more ridiculous than it sounds tbh, but overall pretty fun.
    • Planet of the Sharks. Very interesting worldbuilding that I wish wold have gotten explored some more. They went hard on the climate change stuff, which was not bad.
    • Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. Pretty ridiculous, but about on par for what I expected from this franchise lol
    • Hoax. I'm always down for a Bigfoot hunt, so pretty fun. I feel like the twist discovery at the end kind of ruined it a bit for me though, I don't love a cannibal redneck story.
    • Ozark Sharks. A pretty fun movie cribbed very much from Jaws. But I liked the characters and relationships.
    • Mississippi River Sharks. This was so funny to watch right after Ozark Sharks bc it's the same director and even uses some of the same b roll footage. It also has a character that ties the movies together, plus has a in canon shark movie series that shares names with the director's shark movies, so that was interesting.
  • I was craving a BL romance, so I started a Thai series called Your Sky. I stayed up until after midnight two nights this week because I didn't want to stop watching lol I also got the bff to start watching and she's obsessed as well. It's just so fun and so cute! And great side romances!
  • Watched one more PBS Nova episode, Lost Tombs of Notre Dame. Very interesting!
  • AEW as usual. Kyle Fletcher remains my favorite guy regularly on at the moment.
Listening
  • Been wanting some seasonal music, so I found a summer alt rock playlist. It was ok. I should probably just make myself one.
Writing
  • I wrote a poem for a NaPoWriMo prompt.

Ecco (here it is), from the Latin ecce or eccum, is about presenting a person, thing, or idea and inviting you to perceive it at the very moment it appears.

___________________________________________________________________________________

It's coming.

The darkness.

A summer sunset.

End-of-the-day rays of sunlight filter through thick cloud and caress my face as I sit in the car with the windows down, filling me with a short lived feeling of warmth, before the cloud sweeps past, briefly blocking the dissipating light.

The golden, pink and peach splashes that painted the sky are slowly but surely evaporating.

The afternoon bleeding into evening.

Night waiting patiently around the corner to kill the last remains of the day.

In the still August air I light a cigarette, inhaling the toxins before breathing them back out and watching as the curling smoke poisoned the air around me.

Carbon monoxide mingling with oxygen and nitrogen.

Evening has always been my least favorite part of a day.

Something about it, and watching the sun dip below the horizon has always felt like a loss of hope.

It's always been intertwined with death.

(Ever since the day I learned what mortality is, as I witnessed a bird get shot and plummet, backlit by a setting sun when I was three. A hell of a first memory).

When I learned that the earth's natural state was darkness, that made sense to me.

It still does, literally and metaphorically.

Neither can exist without the other.

Both offer solace in their own ways, yet neither are completely safe.

There can be no light without darkness, no darkness without light.

That is something I have grown to recognize in everything.

Including myself.

Metaphorically, the darkness that dwells in my mind and my memories, my dark side so to speak, is something I can't escape from.

Those things are along for the ride with the light parts, whether I like it or not.

It's just that I'm tired now.

I grew tired of running from them and myself a long time ago, and chose awareness instead, because unlike some people I've known, I've never really mastered the art of denial.

I've always had a debilitating fear of void like spaces, and I can't sleep without some light.

On the other hand though, I love the night.

Everything feels magical, being awake and active during the night always feels like being part of another world.

At night, guards are let down, instincts are acted upon.

Everything is infinite.

Or feels it.

Until the sun rises, dawn melts into day and the light returns.

The same light that can be a smokescreen for me.

An illusion of comfort meant to render us unaware of the visible shadows and shady corners that lengthen steadily as the hour grows later and races towards the inevitable.

(When I remember how the bird dropped, a dead weight, the thing that stands out most in my mind's eye is the blazing sun at its hottest as it dipped closer to the horizon casting light on the way the bullet tore through the bird's body).

Despite my fear of those void like spaces, the sense of apprehension they bring, the dark of the night can be an ironically cathartic hiding place for those who are cognizant of thing they sometimes wish they weren't.

A dog barks in the distance, its haunting echo pulling me out of my thoughts.

With the sun's retreat, the street is beginning to come alive again since I wandered off into the maze that is my mind.

I cast a glance towards the sky, which is now devoid of color.

It's a moonless night.

(Just like the night I was born).

It's here.

"Now it's dark," I think and my eyes meet my own in the rear view mirror,

___________________________________________________________________________________

non-fiction

I'm part Italian, so I was excited to see the prompt for this week. I wanted to tackle it both literally and re symbolism. This is a memory of me watching a sunset in someone's car during a seriously horrible time of my life.

"Now it's dark." is a quote from one of my favorite movies, Blue Velvet (1986), directed by the legendary David Lynch. It is a line repeated by an antagonist and its meaning is that of being comfortable with the darkness in yourself. This resonated with me from when I saw it. Obviously I refer to memories of trauma and PTSD here and that is how it resonated with me, whereas the movie antagonist definitely had some worse issues lol, but the point is the same.

I was indeed born on a moonless night. Forever envious of those born under a full moon!

Wednesday Reading & Recent Books

After blacking out my bingo card for Book Bingo, I haven't been updating my recent reading, so here we go.

What I just finished reading:

Night of the Dragon
Night of the Dragon by Julie Kagawa The third book in the Shadow of the Fox series. The ending was satisfying, but took some twists and turns that I didn't expect. I realized that I had to give up my Western concept of what a good ending to a story was, and understand that the culture referenced here has a much different understanding of life and death than what I do. Highly recommend the entire series.

The Lost Story
The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer I really, really love this book. Think The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe mashed together with Stranger Things and set in the mountains of West Virginia. Some of the twists and story beats I saw coming a mile away, but some of them surprised me.

Confounding Oaths
Confounding Oaths by Alexis Hall I DNF'd this one after reading the prologue and two pages in. My issues with it: first person, set in 1815 but written in the modern era, yet tries to sound like it was written in 1815. Also told from the POV of Puck (the fairy) and tries to be humorous and arch.

What I'm Currently Reading: Forging Silver into Stars by Brigid Kemmerer. I've seen this one recommended in a lot of places, and I'm aware that it's the start of a second trilogy by her. I've looked at the first trilogy and don't think I plan on reading it. Then I'm reading Memory's Legion as a result of my on-going obsession/hyperfixation with all things The Expanse.

What I Plan to Read Next: I have a hold for The Half King by Melissa Landers, so that one should come up next.

I have indeed played lots of ME:A (up to 34% completion, apparently). Also done many other things but all while lacking any desire to put any effort into documenting them! However, I have visited the Stourbridge Glass Museum with Miss H last Thursday, which felt more art-gallery-ish than really museum-y to me, but did have some lovely glass things. There's a big historic gallery, which has lots of... glasses and vases and things, mostly in categories by technique and with plaques that talk about the local connections and the like, and a big 20th century and contemporary gallery with lots of cool and fun modern art glass, with some glasses and vases and the like as well. They also have a "hot shop" with actual glassmakers working, which was my favourite part. I bought a ladybird suncatcher which is hanging on my window and looking very cheerful even behind the slatted blind.

Then on the Saturday we went to Thinktank, the science museum, to see the Space Vault exhibition and also TWO shows in the planetarium because we are suckers for a planetarium. Unlike the Leicester Space Centre we did not get to vote on any trivia questions, but we did learn about summer stars and also the Artemis project. The exhibition itself was full of space-and-astronaut objects that mostly weren't actually very exciting (a piece of broken insulation! a manual! some gloves!) but they did a good job of contextualising the artefacts and adding audio and visual components (although the audio was frankly not loud enough to actually listen to, given the volume in the rest of the floor) and I enjoyed myself. Although, as with last time I went to Thinktank, it was obscenely hot and humid, so I started dragging fairly quickly; possibly I am cursed.

Otherwise I have mostly been preparing for GRADUATIONS, mostly the part where I have to be on campus every day. I made what eventually turned out to be twelve portions of pasta bake, now largely filling my freezer, to be eaten for lunches etc, and attempted to mentally adjust to the prospect. Today was the first day, and so far I have done one ceremony (the first of the season!); I'm signed up for a second already, so we'll see how it goes...
