Yes, I saw s1 of the US one this autumn, too, and it is quite fun and sweet, and some bits do have some of the vibe of the original, but, yeah, they're not got the depth or subtlety there at all yet - but, as you say, it may come, or it may just go on being the lighter edition. (Thorfinn isn't as ancient as Robin, but he must be well over 1000 years old even so, so they do have one much older ghost.)
I saw GHosts s1 when it aired and liked it a lot, but then s2 happened in the autumn of 2020 when we were all in lockdown... and I think s2 is quite special anyway, really, and that made me love it so much. It is just a lovely mix of wacky and sweet and tragic and all sorts. I'm so glad someone else in the icon-making world likes it, too. I tend to need DVDs to get screencaps - I tried with the iPlayer for Ghosts but for some reason I couldn't get anything decent. (It's worked before when I've done that, but Ghosts seemed to just go very fuzzy! Weird. BUt I made this quote one!)
